I have found and been given some very gorgeous images of the quilts in their new homes. I really wanted to share them with you because it is so nice to see them being really loved!

Linda sent me this photo above of The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt which she has very beautifully hung up on her wall in her lounge room. Linda cleverly used the tie from the package to create a hanging device including lovely little decorative edges. I have seen this first hand and it looks so gorgeous up there, Linda has even turned some of the ceiling lights towards it! What a lucky quilt!

Pene Durston of Cottage Industry won The Triangle Quilt and coincidentally was attending a meeting at Craft Victoria at the very moment her name was pulled out of the draw. She came out of the meeting to be told that she would also be taking a quilt home with her. She posted a little blog about her winnings over here.

I am so glad Madeline Sargent of Made by Mosey won The Heart Quilt! Firstly because she is such a lovely and kind person, but also because it looks like Madeline and her two little ones really love it! I found this very cute photo among a few others on her blog, go see them over here. I met up with Madeline at the Craft Hatch market last month to hand over her new quilt and was very excited to meet both her and her work in person! Both so gorgeous!

The Raffle Night

Prize One - The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt
Quilt size: 1740 x 1740mm
Each patch was designed and sewn by 27 crafty local artist, crafters and designers. Each were given the same little swatch of fabric to use within their patch, look at all the different and amazing designs they came up with! They are all so different but somehow work so beautifully together.

Prize Two - The Triangle Quilt
Quilt size: 1300 x 1600mm
The first quilt that was started this year. Made by our original PP group. It was a very hard task I set them as each patch contained 64 triangles. That means that the whole quilt (not including the boarder) has 1250 little triangles, sewn on all 3 sides! What was I thinking?? But look at the very lovely job they all have done. I couldn't be prouder. Thank-you sewers!

Prize Three - The Heart Quilt
Quilt size: 1250 x 1550mm
Made by many hands with much love, it was some sewers first time and some had their skills down pat. This quilt will not only keep you warm but add lots of happy love to any room or couch.

Prize Four - Kitty Came Home Clutch
Donated by the very lovely Katrina Weber of Kitty Came Home. Whoever is lucky enough to be drawn out for prize four will take home this very gorgeous KCH Japanese Print Clutch. Cut from vintage tablecloth! Too cute! I hope my sister wins this so I can steal it!

Prize Five - Not Today Milk Crate Cushions
Donated by no other then the generous Gemma Patford of Not Today. The winner of this prize will take home a set of four absolutely awesome Milk Crate Cushions. Perfect for perching on, with a cold drink in hand, on summer days in the back garden. Those hot days that we are all looking very fondly towards (especially on a cold rainy day like today!).

Prize Six - Pink Snow Flakes Velvet Verity the Owl
Donated by Miss Laura Mah of Pink Snow Flakes. The lucky lady or gent who is drawn as the winner for prize six will take home little Velvet Verity the Owl to love and cherish. As her foster mother it will be hard to say goodbye, but i know she will find another nice cosy home to nest in.

So far we have raised.... $2,245! That is so many little $2 tickets! Only four sleeps until the raffle night! Ohhhhhh my goodness!

Crafty Lady #23 - Jo McAlpine

I'd like to introduce to you the young and very talented Jo McAlpine. Newly donned graphic designer, Jo had just started as Mor Cosmetics new Junior Graphic Designer! Her talents range widely from graphics, to sewing and among many other things to baking! We are very lucky because Jo is contributing to PP in a few different ways...

Firstly, she has sewn the most beautiful patch featuring three very gorgeous flowers, which she has so very perfectly has sewn onto her amazingly constructed background. She has cleverly used the PP fabric colour palette and chosen some very cute and complimentary patterns! It's so pretty jo jo! Thank-you! Check out more of Jo's beautiful work here and here.

Secondly, Miss Joanna has been working on a very exciting new and delicious business prospect called Sweetness and Light, where Jo and her business partner design and produce dessert tables for special occasions. The girls theme the flavors and colours of the table design to your taste, and as a very willing taste tester i can assure you (i have devoured many of the above delights), the flavors will melt you to the ground.

GUESS WHAT! For those coming to the raffle night, you my friends will also be able to try some of Jo's ingenious creations. Sweetness and Light have donated a desert table FULL of amazing treats. Jo has only given me a few hints 'the table will feature Project Patchwork inspired biscuits, macaroons and pink lemonade'. Ohhhhhh! be excited people! Thanks Girls! xx

The Quilts are all Quilted!

Thank-you to everyone who helped quilt the three quilts! We spent all weekend sewing and finally we are all done and ready for the raffle night on Monday 18th of October!

On the Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt we simply sewed around each patch creating 25 square boarders of stitching. We used pink embroidery thread to knot each corner of each square on the Heart Quilt, we tied them off at the back to create a little pink pattern of tassels. For the Triangle Quilt we found a diamond pattern within in the triangle design on the front of the quilt, we have quilted this pattern creating a traditional quilted look on the back of the quilt.

I think they look great and am so proud of all my little sewing angels! A special thanks to Mum, Alice & Emily! Look at what an amazing job they have all done..

Crafty Lady #22 - Carmel McKie

Next up on the bio roll is the very gorgeous Carmel McKie, Craft Victoria Retail Manager. She is the main reason behind why the CV shop Counter is filled with so many beautiful bits and pieces. I have always known that Carmel has a sharp eye for design, amazingness & beauty. BUT when I received her patch I found out she is also just as great at creating design, amazingness & beauty, a whole patch of it!

This is Carmel's patch above. Oh my goodness i could stare at it all day. If you can't see the detail in the photo (you'll just have to come to the raffle night! haha just kidding, i think if you click on the photo it will open up bigger) she has sewn the most lovely little patterns in the panels of colour within her patch. Its so beautiful thanks Carmel!!

Carmel was also involved in Insert Coin Here and made the most beautiful necklaces to fill her pods. See the photo above. Oh! and if you go visit her in the CV shop soon she might still be wearing one of her own hand knitted scarves, featuring the very beautiful moss stitch (which I am yet to try myself)! But you better hurry up, as the sun is coming out more often then not these days! What a crafty lady, i'm so excited we have a piece of her talent in our quilt!

Crafty Lady #21 - Anita Cummins

I have another very talented and lovely crafty lady who gave up her precious time to sew a patch for PP. Her name is Anita Cummins and among many other pretty endeavors, she is the Craft Victoria Assistant Retail Manager.

Anita is also a very talented textile maker/creator/designer. I was so excited to discover that her gorgeous patch she sewed for PP was made from fabric she designed and printed herself! Wow! So much love in a 30cm square! You can see from the image of her patch above that she cleverly integrated the PP fabric into her design by sewing on little triangles that fit perfectly into her fabric pattern. She has also embroidered little circles with pretty coloured thread, creating lovely little soft textures.

In June last year Anita had her first solo exhibition called Pantone Pom Pom at Mailbox 141. I adored her beautiful idea of filling each of the mail boxes with different Pantone coloured pom poms. I think she made around 700 pom poms!! That is a lot of prettiness in such a tiny space! There is a really great interview on Anita and her exhibition over at the CV blog. You can read it here. Anita also knits the most stunning scarves which are for sale at CV. She has and eye and knack for knitting, i remember her showing me a baby blanket she was knitting for her brothers new little bub. Oh my goodness her tension was beyond perfect, not to mention the pattern she was knitting, not one mistake in sight. wow! Thanks Anita for your beautiful patch! x

The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt

As promised, here is the final sewn together Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt! My gorgeous cousin Alice and beautiful mother Amanda and I have been madly cutting, arranging, sewing and finishing off the quilt this week.

Today Alice and I will be sewing on the back (scroll down to see the backing fabric) and batting. Tomorrow mum will help us sew on the edging, which will be a thin strip of the striped backing fabric sewn diagonally to create a candy stripe/air mail envelope edge. We have used little squares of the backing fabric in the corners of each border, hopefully it all ties nicely together. Then we will get to quilting around each square. Such a big job, but we are nearly there!

Thank-you to all our seamstresses who came to Tuesday night sewing group. You were so great and we couldn't have gotten this far without you. Thank-you to all the ticket purchases! They are still rolling in gracefully. AND we have another absolutely gorgeous donated prize which I will announce on Monday.

Sixth Prize! Donated by Pink Snow Flakes!

And we thought this raffle couldn't get any better! The lovely Laura Mah, seamstress behind the absolutely gorgeous Pink Snow Flakes handmade toys, has donated the very beautiful and very soft Velvet Verity the Owl to be our sixth prize at the Project Patchwork raffle night! Wow!

As Verity's babysitter until the raffle night, I have become a little attached. She looks just so lovely amongst my cushions, but I know she will find a comfortable happy new home where she can make a nest amongst a new cluster of cushions. Laura makes such beautiful toys, have a look at her website here for photos of some of her other creations. Oh my goodness! Laura, thank-you so much for donating Verity, she is absolutely stunning and a ticket seller for sure. Thanks also, for the kind mention on your blog. What a happy Monday! x

Crafty Lady #20 - Nella Themelios

Here is the final patch!! Sewn by the very talented and lovely Nella Themelios, coordinating curator at Craft Victoria. Such bright and pretty colours, in such cool geometric shapes. The hot pink piece is even made out of lycra!! Nellas patch is the sprinkles on the cake/our quilt.

Nella is such a busy girl, curating exhibiton after exhibition at CV, yet still managing to find time to curate shows in her personal time. Insert Coin Here was one show Nella and Kim Brockett curated earlier this year, which was a cute travelling exhibition held in vending machines filled with many talented arstist capsules. You have to read more about it here.

Another recent exhibition Nella co-curated was The Sound Project. An exhibition series of performances of experimental instruments which was held at fortyfivedownstairs in July. Pretty amazing looking instruments! I can only imagine what they may have sounded like... super sonic!

Now, this may or may not be the layout the quilt will finally be in. Alice Jones and I have been working really hard this week sewing together the Crafty Ladies & Gents quilt. Yesterday the amazingly gorgeous Michi Girl posted a lovely little story about us! You can read it here. Thanks Michi! I have once again been inundated with people buying whole books of tickets! Thanks guys! We have also had a few of our first international ticket sales! wowzers!! How exciting!

We have so far raised about $1500! Oh my goodness, thank-you everyone who is involved whether you are a sewer, a supporter or a sponsor. We have still got 4 weeks to go and you can buy tickets right up to the second before we announce the winners on Monday 18th Oct at 6.30pm.

Did you see Project Patchwork featured on The Design Files yesterday? You can read it here. Lucy was so kind and did a little surprise post about us which I discovered when I got to work as I am an obsessive TDF lover. I became suspicion on my drive in as I was being inundated with little email beeps on my phone. I could hear it beeping in my bag every few minutes which I was later to discover was from all the raffle ticket payment notifications going into the PP paypal account! SO many of you bought tickets yesterday that firstly I have to do a big second round of tickets, as we have totally run out. Thank-you SO much!! And, secondly I am being audited by PayPal as the influx of money was so great! Thank-you everyone for your support! wow! This is one super raffle!

The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt Update

Here it is! The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt! This is a mock up of the patches so far. As you can see I am missing four patches in this image. Two of them I am yet to photograph, I promise I will do that this weekend so you will be able to see them on Monday, and the two others I am waiting to receive. I am so excited that we are almost there! Such beautiful work by many amazing talents all in one quilt!

This isn't the official layout, I just quickly put it together today, but my plan is to do something similar in terms of the colours. I think that creating a slight rainbow effect across the quilt may help to tie all of the patches together nicely. As they are so different, it is a bit of a challenge to make them look unified. I am also planning to put a little linen boarder in between the patches with each sewers name embroyded in gold thread underneith their own masterpiece.

Quilts Update!

You've all been waiting so desperately to see the heart quilt progress I know, so... here it is! How lovely is the scalloped edge! Mum had done such a beautiful job putting it all together. She just finished tacking the front, batting and back together this weekend, all ready to quilt together. I will post up photos of her beautiful technique as soon as she starts.

You cant see from the first photo above the detail to the quilt but each heart has been so very carefully blanket stitched around. Thanks to all the gorgeous people who sewed a patch together, everyone has done such a beautiful job!

Remember this photo above, well since then I have been super busy sewing the back on (see photo below). Once that's done I'll tack the batting on, turn it right way in and quilt little diamond shapes into the pattern. Thank-you also to The Triangle Quilt sewers, everyone has lovely little stitches and has put them together so beautifully.

Here is a close up of The Triangle Quilt pattern. Can you see the diamond shape I am going to quilt in? I'll give you one clue, its made up of eight triangles. I'm looking forward to getting up to that part, I think it will be fun making little diamond shapes appear.

Kim Brockett's Knitted Patch Progress

How lovely is this patch! Kim is so clever to have thought to knit hers! And in style of course! Knitting with the very lovely Penelope Durston knitting needles. Cute! Kim was so clever she even made little buttons out of the Project Patchwork fabric. Thanks Kim!! x

New Patches!

Look at all the beautiful patches I received last week! Chloe has sewn the pretty bunting from her good friend Kat's wedding. Kim was so ace and decided to knit her patch and made buttons out of the PP fabric! Cat has gone to a stellar effort and embroidered the most amazing detail into her cute-as nerdy rabbit patch. And Lauren chose such beautiful fabrics and has sewn a very lovely pebble pattern each embroidered around the edge!

What more could I ask for? Thank-you ladies, all such happy pretty patches! x

Crafty Lady #19 - Chloe Quigley

Chloe's Patch!

I'm excited to introduce to you another very talented Crafty Lady, Chloe Quigley! Although Chlo is very talented at sewing pretty quilt patches (despite what she may try to tell you), her craft comes more regularly in the form of words. Chloe is co-founder/director/creator (along side Mr Daniel Pollock) of Michi Girl, the most wonderful weather and fashion forecasting daily emails I have ever seen, read or heard. Chlo is constantly creating or retelling the most hilarious stories which relate to and run alongside a fashion product!

Below is an example of a daily post, as I cannot explain in words how amazing they are. You should visit the Michi Girl website (if you aren't already a subscriber) as there are year and years of daily emails in the archive, which will keep you entertained for hours! Oh and if that's not enough... there is a Michi Girl book too 'Like I Give a Frock' which was published in 2008!! Keep your eyes peeled as a little bird told me that there will be a second book coming out at the end of this year. Yay!

If Michi isnt enough, Chlo is also one of 3 directors (along side Sim Elder & Kat Macleod, other crafty ladies!) of the gorgeously lovely Ortolan graphic design studio. I'm pretty sure with two very successful and demanding businesses and two very gorgeous little kiddies, Chlo MUST have a Time-Tuner. Like that one Hermione has in Harry Potter, to turn back time so she can get more things done in her day. If she doesn't I don't know how she gets everything finished!

Remember at the very beginning of this project I wrote a crafty ladies bio about the lovely Cat Rabbit. Well, just look at her patch!!!!! Wow wow wow! I am in love. Quilts Update!

This weekend I finished sewing together the front of the Triangle Quilt! I have used the left over triangles for the border, so it looks a little spiky but I assure you its soft and lovely. I would know, I've have it draped over my lap all week! Today I got the backing fabric and the batting to start the quilting this coming week. I am so excited! I love that this project is making me take time to be crafty, some times life is to crazy that you forget to stop and do the things you love.

Mum has started to sew together the Heart Quilt and we are waiting for a few more patches before we start sewing together the Crafty Ladies & Gent Quilt! All seems to be going to plan. October is coming up very quickly!!

On another positive note.. More gorgeous things are coming out of this project then our ambition to raise money for the Australian Cambodia Foundation, a gorgeous friend has been so inspired by the sewing that she is taking up a new path in textiles! How lovely!

Kim Brockett, Craft Victoria administration officer and freelance curator is one busy busy lady. She has her eggs in many many baskets, one including Project Patchwork! She is sewing a patch for The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt. Yay! I swear every time I talk to Kim is telling me about another exhibition she has curated or project she is working on. I'll try and sum up a few of her recent projects and exhibitions (that I know of anyway, I bet there are zillions more!).

New Craft Hatch logo by Adam Cruickshank

Firstly, Kim is the brains and muscle behind Craft Victoria's Craft Hatch markets, one of the most amazing monthly Melbourne markets, which gives young up-and-coming crafters/makers the opportunity to get their work out into the public. Kim always manages to get such a great group of stall holders, making for a very exciting outing for us market-goers. I actually met Cat from Cat Rabbit and fell inlove with her magical toys at one of the Craft Hatch markets. You may know already that Cat is also making a patch for The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt too, if you didnt, well now you do!

Kim is also in charge of the Craft Victoria clog. Always updating it with Craft Victoria news and related events. A fantastic blog & one of my favorite lunch time reads.

Sculpture by Antuong Nguyen

Yesterday I got a facebook invitation to Gemini Scorpio a Craft Victoria Craft Cubed satellite event of Antuong Nguyen's new sculptures & film being exhibited at the City Library, and curated by Kim. More info can be found here.

Kim also sent me an invitation to High Tea an exhibition she is curating for the end of the year, more information about that one to come. One thing I do know is that Sharon Russell who sewed together a Heart Quilt patch for PP is going to be in it and she knits the most amazing fruits!

A few weeks ago my sister and I attended SUPER MARKET, an exhibition Kim curated at the Gertrude Contempory Art Spaces in Fitzroy. It was so so awesome! The idea was that the artists involved would exchange their work/ideas/creations for offerings from the public. Dell Stewart (a sewer of a Crafty Ladies & Gents patch) was one of the stall holders trading her beautiful wears! See the invitation above for the other artists involved. How perfect is the invitation design, I love it!

At the beginning of the year Kim along with Nella Themelios (another Crafty Lady, bio to come) curated an exhibition called Insert Coin Here as part of the 2010 L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. A moving exhibition of vending machines which were strategically placed around Melbourne containing 'fashion objects' made by 60 Melbourne artist, designers & crafters. The work was placed inside little plastic balls which could be despenced randomly at the cost of $2. Check out the artists who were involved here, some of my very favorites!!

And that was just a little bit about Kim. She is by far one of the most hard working, very successful young lass' I know and who I am so pleased to have involved in the quilt... I just dont know where she will fit the sewing in amongst all this amazing work. Kim you are a star!! x

Crafty Lady #17 - Lauren Mahoney

Lauren Mahoney is another lovely girl who has signed up as a crafty lady and therefore is sewing a patch for 'The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt'. Lauren studied Communication Design at RMIT (like me!) and has a lovely body of work which you can view on her website here.

Her skills range widely from collage (beautiful! see Mountain Print below), illustration, graphic design & photography. Oh and sewing of course! From seeing her lovely work online I am so excited to see her patch, I know its going to be beautiful.

I actually never met Lauren at uni but was told about her from her very gorgeous friend Luci Everett (another RMIT go-er). Its amazing that we never crossed paths really, I should have had more to do with the year above me, they are all little craft & design guns! Thanks for saying yes Lauren! x

Crafty Lady #16 - Hattie Jones

This gorgeous patch you would have seen on Tuesday's post, sewn by Miss Hattie Jones for The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt. I visited her on Saturday to take some photos of a few of her little creations. Hattie is a budding illustrator, painter, sewer, knitter, photographer and maker of lovely things amongst many other skills. She has no doubt inherited and learned many of these talents from her family. Hattie's Mum is Jane from yesterdays post, her Dad, Julian, is a graphic designer/painter/potter/piano accordionist and her sister, Alice, is a fashionista/painter/illustrator/sewer/knitter/maker of lovely things. How cool to grow up in such a creative household!

I have known Hat since she was only hours old and is the only person I have watched grow from a baby to a child to a young adult and I am so very proud of my little cousin! Every time I visit her she is doing something very crafty or creative. I remember one day in particular, Hat found a cute craft project in a frankie magazine of how to make little stuffed creatures. She was busy preparing the things her and her friend needed to make them before her friend arrived. I never was that cool as a young teen, she is above and beyond her years in so many ways! Just have a look at some of her beautiful work below!

Crafty Lady #015 - Jane Wallace Mitchell

This gorgeous patch above is being sewn by the lovely Jane Wallace Mitchell (my very beloved aunt/big sister) a Melbourne illustrator, crafter, designer, potter, knitter, pretty much do-er of all gorgeous activities you can possibly think of.

Although she trained as a graphic designer, Jane has worked mostly as a freelance illustrator. She has the most amazing, lovely, stunning, gorgeous and inspirational style that it could only be recognised as her own. Her work has been a major influence in the development of my own work from a child up until now, as a designer. I was always thinking while drawing or crafting as a youngster 'what would Jane do?'.

Jane is also a very talented potter! Her latest creation being the series of little coil ladies (oh! they are just stunning!). You can see them in the photos below that I snapped on the weekend around her house. Everywhere you turn in her house, there is another nice little creation of hers, or of Julian's (her husband), or Hattie's (her youngest daughter, who's patch I posted yesterday) or of Alice's (who's bio & patch images will be coming soon). As you may have now gathered they are a very creative and talented family.

Gracia + Louise's Patch!

Everyday I come home from work and race to the mail box, hoping to find it filled with patches and today I was so very excited when I saw an envelope from Gracia + Louise! I knew when I opened it I would find something beautiful so, like charlie with his chocolate bar, I unwrapped it very slowly. Meanwhile, the girls I live with were yelling at me telling me to hurry up and rip it open. I was right, the girls have absolutely blown me away, as expected, with a very very gorgeous patch!

These gorgeous photos have inspired me to retake all the ones of the patches I have taken so far. I usually have to take them at night in the light of my room when I get home from work, so they are flat and dull. Sorry! Crafty Lady #014 - Amy Borrell

I have another lovely little crafter to introduce to you and her name is Amy Borrell. I first met her at my uni (although she may not remember as there were about 70 of us listening to her talk) where we both studied Communication Design, she was the year above me and someone who I looked up to. I remember one project in particular Amy made in her final year that we all were blown away by and that was a book she hand bound, leaving the spine raw exposing the rainbow stitching (see below for photo). The book was a collection of photos, letters, memories and favorite things collected for a life lived so far, ordered A-Z. I knew then that Amy was a girl to keep my eye on, and I was right!

Since then she has been illustrating and designing her little heart out. She has many blogs and projects to get lost in. Raffle Night, New Patches & Black Betty!

I have a lot of great news for you today! I am so excited, everything seems to be falling in place. I'd like to thank everyone, even at this point (we still have a while to go), SO much for your input and support. This project has gone above and beyond what I expected and I am absolutely over the moon with happiness. I hope your all enjoying being involved too!

Dell's progress photos!

An email came this weekend from Dell Stewart with progress images of her patch! Another very gorgeous design! I wrote a little bio about Dell about a week ago which you can view here.

Dell's patch is not only gorgeous but also made up of fabrics she has made herself! The two wood grain patterns are her own handmade fabrics, made from raw silk and cotton drill. The spotty background fabric was also made by Dell with a fabric marker. The other fabrics she used were offcuts given to her by another lovely Melbourne crafter, Penelope Durston. Dell told me in her email that the themes within her patch are the patterns, triangles & fabrics she loves. I just love it! So many pretty patterns and I love hexagons, which will also tie in with Tamarah Marwood's patch... its all coming together very nicely!

Crafty Lady #013 - Sim Elder

The lucky number thirteen crafty lady who I am introducing to you is the one and only Sim Elder a very talented graphic designer/art director and sometimes illustrator/sewer/crafter. She is another crafty lady dewing a patch! Sim has an stunning past, working in many amazing companies and studios. Now she is one of three directors (others being Kat Macleod & Chloe Quigley) of her very own Melbourne graphic design studio Ortolan.

I have collected images from some my favorite shoots Sim has art directed recently (those that I know of anyway and there are heaps!). There are a lot more shoots she has worked on that I haven't seen and also some I'm not allowed to publish yet but you will see around in summer for sure. I am one lucky girl and have the opportunity to learn about art direction & design from the lovely Sim herself.

I also found the photo below on The Design Files when Lucy featured Kat's home on her blog. Sim customised a vintage doily just for Kat which i thought was too sweet not to post. Sim makes the most gorgeous cards for her friends with little big headed girls and boys she illustrates just like the one in her patch! I'm so excited its looking so cute, sleeping under her own little quilt.

I am introducing to you another duo involved in ‘The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt’, the very cool and talented Clea Garrick & Nathan Price.

The two are the brains and bones behind the Australian fashion label Limedrop, which is the most stunning label with very to-die-for pieces made for both boys & girls. Their current range is sporting the most awesome cloud print that you would recognise from a mile away as being the current seasons Limedrop signature. They have even managed to turn the cloud pattern into the most amazing knitted jumper!

Limedrop also make such lovely jewellery with animal faces, diamonds, padlocks, hearts, envelopes, and more, they have pretty much thought of everything… all the things you would love to have hanging around your neck. Crafty Ladies #09 & #10 - Gracia + Louise

As a Friday treat, and thank you kindly for visiting, I am going to introduce you to not one BUT two very talented ladies (and i'm sure you know them well)... Gracia + Louise. These two ladies are also very kindly giving up their time to sew a patch for 'The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt'.

Melbourne girls, Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison are a duo that work closely together making a range of beautiful creations some of those being; artist books, zines, prints, postcards, pencil cases, cards, journals & dolls. They are widely skilled and make just the most amazing and inspiring work. At my work we have a Gracia + Louise collage hanging up on the wall right in my eye line and I get stuck staring at it. The wild worlds Gracia + Louise create with paper, watercolour and collage really do take you to another place.

Under the name of Hammer & Daisy the two also make the most special dolls and creatures as well as a range of beautiful stationary. Each one hand crafted, each one beautifully individual. They are sewn together with beautiful fabrics, buttons, patches and beads. They are definitely individual little personalities that you would expect to come alive at night (in a whimsical non scary way).

Crafty Lady #08 - Dani M

One of my most favorite jewellery designers ever. May i introduce to you the very lovely Dani M (aka Queen of Porcelain Creations). Another crafty lady adding a patch to 'The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt'.

Dani's been making porcelain delights since 2001. She has a great view on fashion (which I totally second) and I quote from her website 'Dani M doesn't believe that fashion should always be so serious. Its meant to be fun, so you straight faced hipsters relax'. Shes talented, wise and simply adorable in person.

I can help but love every piece of Dani's collections, one I love in particular and own a pair of are the very beautiful gold square faceted earings. I wore them everyday till my kitten took a fancy to them too and took one on an adventure, never to be seen again. Another one is on its way so I can wear them again! Phhew!

Crafty Lady #07 - Gillian Bencke

If you are a keen crafter or lover of craft and pretty things then no doubt you have run into a Bencke doll or two as they are scattered around lovely little shops all over Australia.

Bencke dolls are delicately crafted by Gillian Bencke since 2005 and who is based in Newcastle, Australia. One of the many lovely things about Gillians dolls is that each one is handmade and in turn, each little creation is unique, no two are the same.

The story of how gillian came to be producing her quirky creatures begins at home in the scrub of dudley and leads to tales of plays and hikes and music and singing, as well as ones with chooks and sickles and bee stings. a degree in communications studies, led to photography, self-publishing, exhibitions, installations and collaborations. studies in digital media were followed by travel: a broken LOMO camera and the collecting of memories instead. somehow on the streets of paris the idea of 'dolls' from rescued fabric came to be.

Crafty Lady #06 - Dell Stewart

Here I introduce another kind and talented sole Dell Stewart, who is giving up time to sew a patch for 'The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt'.

Dell Stewart is an absolute inspiration to me. She does many things including working with sculpture, drawing, animation and installation. If you know her, you will recognise her instantly by her pretty almost-to-the-floor strawberry blonde locks. I see her a person without limits with great big and very grand ideas. She is extremely talented and isn't afraid to be free and show her diverse skills.

Dell has recently been involved in a joint exhibition Triangle with Andrea Eckersley at Craft Victoria (oops there I go again dropping the CV bomb) which finishes this Saturday 12 June. Another project Dell is working on along side Adam Cruickshank for Craft Victoria is a limited edition tote designed as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations to commemorate all things handmade, also as a reflection of Dell & Adams history of collaboration in art & life. CV are running a really fun competition for us citizens to customize the bag however and which ever way you please. I am so upset I found all this out today as I write this blog because its due by closing time tonight and there is no way I will be able to get it done and delivered in my lunch break. So shattered.

Dell has an amazing biography including a Bachelor of Fine Arts from James Cook University and a Graduate Diploma in Animation and Interactive Media at RMIT. Crafty Lady #05 - Kat Macleod

Today I am introducing the very talented and very lovely Kat Macleod, another Crafty Lady involved in 'The Crafty Lady & Gents Quilt'.

Kat is an illustrator and one of three directors of Melbourne graphic design company Ortolan (where I work too!). Yes, Kat is one of three of my lovely go-to-girls (ie boss'). She is very familiar with a needle and thread, if you know her work well you will have seen she features textiles and beautifully detailed sewing into many of her illustrations.

Kat has worked for a large range of individuals and companies which you may recognise her work from. Just to name a few; Michi Girl, Vogue (Entertaining & Chinese), So Frenchy So Chic, Clare Bowditch, Third Drawer Down, Bloom, The Age (melbourne) magazine... and the list goes on.

I am so so very excited to see what Kat comes up with, I know its going to be a knock out!

Crafty Lady #04 - Cat Rabbit

I am very excited and honored to introduce to you the very talented Cat from Cat Rabbit. You may be surprised (or not) to know I discovered Cat at the very first Craft Victoria Craft Hatch Market in Jan 2009. Since then I have been a very keen follower and big fan of her work.

Cat is a doll maker and originally a Tassie girl but has been spending a bit of her time here in Melbourne featuring at artist markets and making beautiful window displays here and there. I saw her again at the May Craft Hatch market this year and adopted one of her gorgeous little owls. He sits proudly on my book pile next to my bed looking oh so sweet.

Cat has been nothing but lovely & overly supportive of Project Patchwork and I am over the mood that she is one of the 27 crafty ladies sewing a patch for The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt.

Embroided Hearts

For those of you out there sewing together a Heart Quilt patch, here is a little assistance of how to embroider the hearts.

1. Knot the end of your thread about 3cm in from the end and sew from the back through to the front about 5mm in from the edge of the heart.

2. Pull string through gently until you feel the knot stopping you. Then thread the needle through from the edge of the heart to 5mm in from the edge (as you can see in photo above). Make sure needle overlaps the string and pull needle through until you make an L shape, as seen below.
3. Continue the same technique as you make your way around the heart.

4. Once you get to the valley section of the heart you may need to re-enforce the stitch so it stays in place. Use the normal technique, then thread the needle back through the same hole but going in on the other side of the string so it holds and then back through to the front again.

5. Continue the stitch technique as normal.

6. When you get to the last stitch, thread the string back though to the back and tie it off with the 3cm you left at the beginning.
I hope that makes sense and helps a little! Call me if you need, my number is on the instruction sheet. Happy stitching! x

The First Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt Patch!!

Katrina Weber from Kitty Came Home has been so organised and speedy and sent me a progress pic of her patch for The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt last week which you can see below. Then on Friday I received the finished patch in the mail! I am so happy, because as you can see it is beautiful!! She has created such a cute little landscape including the KCH signature birds and her little KCH logo mark. I just love it! Thanks Katrina!

Sunday Workshop

Today we had a sewing workshop at my house. I handed out the Heart Quilt kits and some people started sewing them together and others were finishing off their Triangle Quilt patches.

I'm so excited to see it all come together. Everyone is doing such a beautiful job. I received the first Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt patch back in the mail on Friday! I am so happy, it is gorgeous. I will post photos tomorrow.

Crafty Lady #03 - Luci Everett

Oops, I missed a post yesterday. Sorry Its because I am working hard on 'The Heart Quilt' and ran our of time. I'll put photos up soon so you know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, enough about me. Today's post is to introduce to you a very crafty and talented lady, Miss Luci Everett. Luci is a young lady who was in the year above me at uni and who's work I have always admired AND who I was finally introduced to in person last year.

I was so so excited when Luci said she would sew a patch for The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt because her work is brilliant! She has such a beautiful touch to her work, something I admire and am inspired by every time I see her work. I'm a little bit addicted to looking at her flickr which is full of beautiful photographs. Also she is busy working on two other projects - We Make Words which you can view here and The Side Project which you can see here. Oh yeah and she also has a blog check it here! Whoa, busy lady.

At the moment Luci is working part time as in-house designer for the Australian Ballet, and part time in her bedroom doing far more playful freelance projects. Check out her website here, she just updated it with so many beautiful new projects. Luci also told me she is in the midst of putting together an online print store, which I find very exciting, finally I can own a piece of Luci's perfectly whimsical work. When I ask Luci for an update she also mentioned, and I quote, '...if I go any further I'd start talking about drinking way too much coffee and getting way awesome muscles from bicycling... which is not very relevant... anyway...'. And that my friends just proves just how nice, funny and awesome this girl is. Thanks Luci!!

Okay time to look at her work, you will be blown away I promise...

Crafty Lady #02 - Tamara Marwood

The second talented crafty lady I am introducing to you is the lovely Tamara Marwood.

I also found her while working at Craft Victoria when she had her exhibition A Little Lady Tinkling & Smearing. It was absolutely beautiful, I would constantly find myself mesmerized by the colours and shapes the video was making on the wall through the quilt. Actually I have to admit, I think the only reason I love craft and know all these people is because of Craft Victoria. They have taught me everything. Thanks CV!

Tamara is a talented little stitcher and quilter and textile queen. I check her blog regularly and to find posts about lovely projects she is working on or things that she finds inspiring which in turn always inspires me.

Every day I will be posting a little bio about each of the 27 lovely crafty ladies and gentlemen that are involved in 'The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt'. So to begin, the first crafty lady I would like to introduce is:

Katrina Weber from Kitty Came Home...

Kitty ventures everywhere, far and wide and back in time. Everyday Kitty comes home with vintage surprises. Where she goes nobody knows. She collects fabrics, buttons and bits and pieces of pre-loved domesticity along her way. Kitty then fashions this collection into unique purses filled with memories and the adventures of Kitty.

I was first introduced to Kitty Came Home while I was at Craft Victoria and spotted the absolutely beautiful vintage fabric purses which Katrina makes. There are so many beautiful fabric choices its hard to decided which one to pick! I just love them all! She also makes really lovely journal covers and very cute little transparent coin purses. Also, Katrina has sent me a progress shot of her patch for 'The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt' (oh my goodness it is gorgeous!), but I will reveal it along with some others when I get a few more.

The Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt

The fabric which will feature in each patch

I have asked 27 of my favorite designers, crafters and friends to be involved in the 'Crafty Ladies & Gents Quilt'. Each person will design their own 30x30cm patch, each one including the same piece of fabric (shown above) which I sent to them in their kits. Once I have received all of the patches back I will sew them all together to make a big 25 patch quilt.

The quilt will be raffled along with the 'Triangle Quilt' & 'The Heart Quilt' on our raffle night, date and location to be confirmed. I will post the details up once its all organised so you can come along, have a drink and see this quilt and the other two quilts in person. And if you like you can buy a ticket or two to be in the running to win one of them.

Hello Pretty Patchworkers!! I just got a newsletter from Geraldine Cox and in it was this gorgeous photo. I thought I needed to upload it so you can all see what your sewing so hard for. We are making a difference not only to the orphan children who live in Cambodia's lives but also to Geraldine's life. As she battles breast cancer she is only thinking of everyone else. Thank-you to everyone who came to the workshop on Sunday, to who asked for patches to be taken home for them and to those whom I am about to send packs out to in the post. You are all so lovely, thank-you for your hard work.

ANNOUNCEMENT! The charity I have chosen for us to raise money for this year is the Australian Cambodia Foundation organised and run by the very caring Geraldine Cox. The foundation supports an orphanage in Cambodia which Geraldine started back in 1993. You may have seen a little feature about her on the 7pm Project, which is where I discovered her. Geraldine has recently been fighting breast cancer so I thought as it is closely related to our past endeavors we could help her out.

How to sew a patch for the Triangle Quilt.

Step One - Choose two fabrics from the pack that you think look charming together and layout in a square shape.

Step Two - Pin two of the pieces of fabric together in each corner of the grey lead sewing lines, making sure the markings are matching on both sides. See next image as how best to sew the triangle together.

Step Three - Sew the two contrasting fabric pairs together (make sure you lay the square out again before sewing the second pair to make sure your sewing the correct side) and secondly sew the pairs together to make a square.

Reminder/Tip - To make sure you pin before sewing. Start my matching the middle points then the two outside points.

Step Four - You've done the first one! Now 15 more to go...Step Five - Sew Four squares together creating Four strips. Then sew the strips together creating a finished square patch! (I'll post a photo of my patch once I have finished it).

The Packs Are Done!

I've traced and cut out 1,280 triangles for the Triangle Quilt, with the help from my gorgeous mother Amanda and very lovely friend Britt. The instruction sheets are printed, the envelopes are labeled so I guess once I put everything in the envelopes, the packs are done!

Now.. for the workshop, this is where the fun begins.

Its 2010, another year has come upon us and this means Project Patchwork is back in action!

This year we will be doing three small quilts, it worked so well last year we thought why not do it again. Two will be simple beautiful quilts which will come with a kit of patterns and fabric. And the other will be a more challenging option of designing and creating your own patch within supplied size constraints and including a piece of supplied fabric which will feature in each patch.

WE RAISED $1600 for Camp Quality Victoria - a very worthy cause and I'm sure a welcome boost to their current fund raising efforts.

NEXT YEAR Lizzie will take PROJECT PATCHWORK nationally and she has exciting plans to include professional craftspeople, as well as our enthusiastic sewers .... but she will update everyone in 2010!

We have set up at the Camberwell Sunday Market for two Sundays so far.... four more to go. Ticket sales are up from last year - the Penfold's Grange Hermitage is very popular. We made the tickets for the wine at $5 each as a much more affordable offer. -
Drop in any Sunday - unless it is raining - Don, David, Karlene and Jude have been to visit - it certainly brightens my time!

OTHER UPDATES:
This year's drawing of the RAFFLE has been set for Sunday 15 November 2009 at my home (Melbourne Australia) at 6pm. Please make a note in your diary to keep this date free, please bring your partners or friends and family - it was a lot of fun last year, seeing the finished quilts and having a glass of wine and chat to all the sewers - most people know each other. This year will be more fun with four raffle prices, we will incorporate Arthur's idea of elimination to pick the winning ticket and then make the phone calls to winners.

CAMP QUALITY VICTORIA have contacted me offering another quilt for our raffle. Pictures of this machine made quilt are shown above. Made in Churchill (Gippsland, Victoria) sewn by Avril McKeand and quilted by Jean Bandendistel in 2008 for Camp Quality. It is a very pretty quilt and measures 120cm x 120cm - a small quilt for your lap, or for a baby.
We have been provided with brochures from "Camp Quality Victoria" to give out if people are interested in finding out more about their activities. Also, if you click on the CQ icon below - it will take you straight to their website. They provide funding to children with cancer and their siblings and parents. I was told today that the number of children presenting with cancer is falling... about 3,000 children in Victoria are being helped by Melbourne's Camp Quality. Another fund raiser is a 50K walk during November... ten hours non stop. That is some challenge - I'm sure they will get lots of support!

CAMBERWELL SUNDAY MARKET
Because we have three quilts I will again arrange to visit the Camberwell Sunday Market for the six Sundays prior to 15 November. It gives me the opportunity to sell tickets and advertise our raffle, also you can come down to drop off, or pick up more tickets, or information, etc. Please let me know if you would like to come one morning.

RAFFLE TICKETS are well underway - my daughter Liz has drawn up a larger ticket than last year - big improvement - and they will be ready soon. We have decided to have a separate ticket for the wine - it will make things simple at the drawing the raffle!

Penfold's Grange Hermitage Raffle

Elephant Quilt

The elephant quilt was inspired by a book I bought "Ralli Quilts - Traditional Textiles from Pakistan and India" published by Schiffer. Ralli Quilts are a combination of traditional applique -(we are using traditional applique for the elephant image - and another type of applique where a shape such as a flower or star or angle is cut or folded into the top of two fabrics, the cut is folded with a fine seam and stitched into place either creating a shape that sits on the base fabric (we have done this on the middle patch of the elephant quilt) or framing a shape to the base fabric (this has been done on the yellow and green patches).

One main fabric chosen for the elephants has set the colour pallet - bold and fun. Hope you like it. Also the Shape being octagonal will be interesting to sew together. This picture shows the completed pieces to date. It won't take long to finish the front and then we can add some other decoration if needed.

The Blue Willow Quilt

Thank you to all the people who have sewn squares and the borders of The Blue Willow (Jane, Harriet, Alice, Jo, Barbara, Liz, Victoria, Deb, Elanna, Ruth, Trinity, Elizabeth, Karlene, Jill, Allison, Diedre, Emily, Nardia, Linda and Britt) and some people missed out because we only had 20 squares . The quilt top is now put together with a small border of blue squares and a thicker white border. I have asked Alice my niece to add some freehand design to the white area before the quilt is put together for quilting. Watch this blog for an update.

Blue Willow Quilt

This is a sample square of the Blue Willow Quilt which we are presently working on for the end of 2009 raffle. The 20 patches have been distributed and I hope to have this quilt finished by end of July. Our youngest sewer is Harriet - my niece who is 13 years of age - go Hat!

The name of this quilt comes from a Liberty fabric called "Willow" which Liberty of London Prints Limited adapted from a William Morris design. This is one of three quilts that we will make this year. All three quilts will be smaller in size than last year's - finished size to be 1500 x 1250 which is perfect for a single bed or it can be used as a throw and fits long ways over a double or queen sized bed.

Congratulations Ruth Lowen of Glen Iris. Ruth was telephoned last night after her ticket was drawn by Don and she was able to call into our house on her way home from dinner to pick-up the quilt.

By 8.30 pm last night all the tickets had been received and monies collected so I am able to confirm that we raised $1856.00 in total. A great effort for the 30 people who undertook to sell 900+ tickets! Most of this money is already with the Cancer Council Victoria.

Photos of the drawing of the raffle will be published on this blogsite shortly.

The sewing of our next quilt/s will start just before Easter 2009 so in the meantime, thank you to all those people who helped me work on the quilt, organize the raffle, got involved. Hope everyone has a relaxing and fun Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Yellow Flower 2008

Our first project! Friends, neighbours and family members from the Camberwell area, Melbourne (Australia) have all participated in hand sewing "Yellow Flower". The majority of sewers had never done patchwork before, so it is a fantastic result. The pattern has evolved slowly from finding a small sample of striped fabric that when sewn in strips look a little like the middle of a daisy, then using the large amount of yellow fabric to carry a daisy colour, adding white petals - and four corners with a mix of green and colours to repeat the centre square colours and suggest leaves.

This quilt is sized for a queen-size bed, measuring 2140mm x 2140mm.

This quilt will be part of the Craft Exhibition at the Royal Melbourne Show 2008. We will be commencing the raffle mid October 08, tickets butts to be returned by 20th November 08 in time for the draw on Friday 28 November 2008. Project Patchwork

Project patchwork was inspired by a group of nurses based in Brisbane, who make approximately 2 quilts per year and have done so for the last nine years to raise money for the cancer community.

My family has had a high incidence of cancer, including myself. I have had treatment for early stage breast cancer twice, the first time in 2004 and the second time in 2006. I am celebrating having finished treatment and no longer being on the receiving end of the wonderful groups of people who quietly work in the background to support those who have cancer. I have decided to do this by working on a community quilt, like the nurses in Brisbane, that can be raffled to raise money for cancer research with the hope that our kids will benefit.

I have worked in the Interior Design Industry for many years and have a huge collection of fabric offcuts, remaining from soft furnishing work and samples. I am inspired to design quilts from an interior designer's perspective - that hopefully will appeal enough for people to buy tickets and enjoy the quilt.
